Seven-Parameter Spirometry with Predicted Value Comparison at Point of Care
The Contec SP10 (VM-SIPROSP10) is a handheld infrared digital spirometer that measures the seven core spirometric parameters used for diagnosing and monitoring obstructive and restrictive pulmonary conditions: Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), Forced Expiratory Volume in one second (FEV1), FEV1/FVC ratio, Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF), and forced expiratory flows at 25%, 75%, and 25–75% of exhaled volume (FEF25, FEF75, FEF25-75). These parameters collectively support assessment of airflow obstruction severity in asthma and COPD, detection of restrictive patterns in interstitial lung disease and neuromuscular conditions, and monitoring of lung function response to bronchodilator therapy. Measured values are automatically compared against age- and gender-matched predicted values on-device, giving clinicians an immediate interpretive reference at the point of care without requiring manual look-up of reference ranges. The 1.8″ colour LCD (160×128px) renders real-time flow-volume loops and volume-time curves directly on the device, supporting pattern recognition during the test.
Infrared Sensor, Data Memory, and USB PC Connectivity
The SP10 uses an infrared signal acquisition mode across a volume measurement range of 0–10L (accuracy ±3% or ±0.05L, whichever is greater) and a flow range of 1–16L/s (accuracy ±10% or ±0.3L/s, whichever is greater). Patient test data is stored in device memory and can be reviewed, recalled, or deleted on-device — supporting serial monitoring in follow-up consultations without requiring continuous PC connectivity. USB connectivity and included PC software allow session data to be uploaded to a workstation for detailed review, trend chart display, and longitudinal lung function tracking over time. A calibration (scaling) function is available to maintain measurement accuracy over the device’s operational life, and an on-screen prompt alerts the user when measured volume or flow exceeds measurement range limits.
Ultra-Compact and Rechargeable for Ward, Clinic, and Occupational Health Use
At 97×89×36mm and 150g, the SP10 is pocket-sized for clinicians conducting ward rounds, community health visits, occupational health lung function screening, and pre-employment respiratory assessments where carrying a desktop spirometer is impractical. The DC 3.7V rechargeable lithium battery with integrated charge indicator eliminates disposable battery management, and automatic power-off after one minute of inactivity extends battery life between charges. Working current is 60mA. Safety classification is internally powered equipment with a type BF applied part, meeting the electrical safety standard for equipment in contact with patients. Available in South Africa from Vital Medical, the Contec SP10 is suited to general practitioners, pulmonologists, occupational health nurses, physiotherapists, and occupational health facilities requiring a portable, clinically capable spirometer for routine pulmonary function testing.
