What Is a Resuscitation Mask Size 3?

A size 3 resuscitation mask is a paediatric facial mask designed to create an airtight seal over the nose and mouth of a child, typically 10-30kg body weight, during bag-valve-mask (BVM) ventilation or mouth-to-mask rescue breathing. The transparent design allows the clinician to observe lip colour and check for vomiting during ventilation. The ISO5356-1-compatible 22mm patient connector interfaces directly with standard resuscitator bags and anaesthetic breathing circuits.

Clinical Application in Paediatric Resuscitation

Size 3 masks are standard equipment on paediatric resuscitation trolleys, in emergency departments, paediatric ICUs and on all pre-hospital resuscitation kits with a BLS or ILS scope. They are used during in-hospital and out-of-hospital cardiac arrest resuscitation, during respiratory failure requiring manual ventilation, and during paediatric anaesthetic induction when a laryngeal mask or endotracheal tube is not yet in place. Correct mask size is critical, since an adequate seal cannot be achieved with an incorrectly sized mask.
