The size 3 mask provides the appropriate facial seal for the paediatric face, and the pressure relief valve prevents the barotrauma that is particularly dangerous in small, compliant paediatric airways.

Paediatric resuscitation requires instruments scaled to the patient, since an adult BVM used on a child delivers dangerously high tidal volumes that can cause pneumothorax and worsen outcomes.
