Choosing the Right Examination Couch and Equipment for Your Doctor’s Room

Whether you’re setting up a brand-new consulting room or refreshing an existing one, the equipment you choose shapes every patient interaction — from first impressions to the quality of care you can deliver. It’s worth getting right.

Here’s a practical guide to the key pieces of furniture and equipment that belong in a well-equipped doctor’s room, and what to look for when choosing each one.

The Examination Couch: Your Most Important Investment

The examination couch is the centrepiece of any consulting room. Patients will spend time on it at every visit, so comfort matters — but so does your ability to examine them effectively.

The most important feature to look for is an adjustable backrest. This lets you position the patient at the angle most suitable for the examination — flat for abdominal palpation, slightly reclined for a chest assessment, or upright for a respiratory consult. Our Examination Couch with Adjustable Backrest (VM-EXCRAT) does exactly this, with a comfortable upholstered surface that’s easy to wipe down between patients.

When evaluating any couch, consider:

  • Backrest adjustability — a fixed flat couch limits what you can do clinically
  • Upholstery quality — should be firm enough for support, covered in a material that tolerates regular disinfection
  • Height — is it at a comfortable working height for you? (More on this below)
  • Weight capacity — especially relevant in a general practice serving a wide patient population
  • Footprint — measure your room before you buy; a couch that dominates the space makes the room feel clinical and cramped

Step Stools: Small But Essential

A step stool is easy to overlook, yet it’s one of the most-used items in a consulting room. Patients — particularly older adults, children, and those with mobility challenges — need a stable, non-slip step to get onto the couch safely.

For most consulting rooms, a single-step stool is sufficient. We offer options in epoxy-coated steel (like the VM-SSEPRA with its rubber non-slip top) and stainless steel for high-hygiene environments. If your couch is higher off the ground, or you see patients who need more assistance, a double-step stool gives them an intermediate landing point.

Key things to check: rubber or chequered non-slip tops, a stable wide base, and a construction that won’t flex or wobble under load.

A Stool for You: Don’t Overlook the Doctor’s Seat

Hours of consulting from a bad chair will catch up with you. A proper adjustable operating or doctor’s stool with a height-adjustable seat and castors lets you position yourself correctly for examinations without straining your back.

Our epoxy-coated operation stools (VM-OSEPC) and stainless steel options (VM-OSSSAM) are both height-adjustable with upholstered seats — comfortable for long clinic days and easy to clean at the end of a session.

A Dressing or Instrument Trolley

Even in a general practice, you need somewhere clean to lay out instruments and supplies during a procedure. A dressing trolley with stainless steel shelves gives you a hygienic, easy-to-disinfect mobile surface that you can wheel to wherever you need it.

We stock dressing trolleys in small, medium and large sizes in both epoxy-coated and full stainless steel frames. For most GP rooms, a medium epoxy trolley (VM-DTMEP) hits the sweet spot between capacity and footprint.

Patient Privacy: The Mobile Bed Screen

If your consulting room is shared, or if you use a single space for reception and examinations, a mobile bed screen is invaluable. A three- or four-fold screen on castors can be positioned in seconds to give patients the privacy they deserve during examinations, then folded away when the consultation is done.

Our PVC-curtained screens (VM-BS3, VM-BS4F) are wipe-clean, lightweight, and move easily on smooth-rolling castors.

Putting It All Together

A well-equipped consulting room doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. At minimum, you need:

  • An examination couch with adjustable backrest
  • A step stool for patient access
  • A doctor’s stool for your own comfort
  • A dressing trolley for instruments and supplies
  • A mobile screen for privacy

Get these right and you’ll have a room that works smoothly for you and feels professional and welcoming to your patients.
