Height Adjustment, Backrest, and Knee Break
The VM-STWXR (E-8) hydraulic trauma stretcher adjusts in height from 600 to 920mm (±10mm) via dual rise-and-fall hydraulic pump systems operated by foot pedals on both sides of the frame. The 320mm working range allows a low transfer height for safe loading from ambulance trolleys or ground level, and a raised clinical height that reduces musculoskeletal strain on staff during resuscitation, assessment, and procedural care. The backrest is controlled by a gas spring mechanism and adjusts from flat (0°) to near-upright (85° ±5°), supporting airway positioning, respiratory compromise management, conscious sedation, and patient sitting comfort across the full range without jerky or uncontrolled movement. The knee break section adjusts from 0° to 30° via a manual crank, enabling semi-Fowler positioning, lower-limb elevation for venous return support, and improved patient comfort during extended procedures.
X-Ray Translucency, Trendelenburg, and Patient Safety
The top board is manufactured from X-ray translucent material, eliminating the need to transfer the patient to a separate imaging surface for plain film radiography — reducing unnecessary movement of trauma patients and streamlining workflows in emergency departments and trauma bays. Trendelenburg and reverse Trendelenburg tilt are controlled by foot pedals, providing rapid positional correction for haemodynamically compromised patients, post-procedure recovery positioning, and head-of-bed elevation. Four anti-collision corner bumpers protect both the patient and room infrastructure during corridor and bay movement. Collapsible aluminium alloy side rails provide bilateral fall protection and fold flat for lateral access and patient transfers. A lead-screw interference protection system is integrated into the height adjustment mechanism to prevent mechanical damage during operation.
Castor System, Frame Construction, and Standard Accessories
Mobility is managed by four central-brake castors and a directional fifth-wheel steering castor, which allows controlled directional driving — particularly useful in narrow corridors and tight bay configurations where a conventional four-castor layout requires repeated repositioning. The central brake system locks all four castors simultaneously. The galvanized steel frame carries an electrostatic powder spray finish for corrosion resistance and compatibility with hospital-grade disinfectants. A stainless steel IV pole with four holes for repositioning is included as standard, along with two fixed push handles, an X-ray cassette holder, drainage provision, and a full-length mattress. Available in South Africa from Vital Medical, the VM-STWXR is suited to emergency departments, trauma bays, operating theatres, recovery rooms, ICUs, and inter-ward patient transport.
