Compact Chair Scale for Senior and Differently-Abled Patients
The Charder MS5460 is a clinical chair scale designed for weighing patients who are unable to stand safely on a standard floor scale ? including elderly patients, patients with severe mobility impairments, patients requiring wheelchair transfer assistance, and post-surgical patients in rehabilitation who have not yet regained safe standing balance for the duration of a weighing event. The chair configuration allows patients to be weighed in a seated position, eliminating the fall risk associated with requiring a standing weighing event for patients whose balance or lower limb strength is insufficient to maintain a stable standing position for the 1?2 seconds required for standard scale stabilisation.
BSA Function for Clinical Dosing and Cardiac Assessment
Beyond standard BMI calculation, the MS5460 includes body surface area (BSA) calculation ? a clinical measurement used in oncology for chemotherapy dosing, in cardiology for cardiac output indexing, and in nephrology for dialysis dose calculations. BSA is less affected by abnormal adipose mass than body weight alone, making it a more accurate metabolic indicator for patients with obesity, oedema or significant muscle mass variation. The inclusion of both BMI and BSA in a chair scale configuration is clinically significant for cancer and cardiac patients who are often unable to stand for standard floor scale weighing.
Practical Design for Clinical Mobility and Data Management
The MS5460’s folding frame collapses for transport between clinical areas, swivelling armrests allow lateral patient transfer from a wheelchair without obstruction, and foldable footrests accommodate different patient leg lengths. Four castor wheels with brakes allow the scale to be positioned at the bedside or in any clinical space and then locked in position for the weighing event. Tool-free clip fastenings enable one-person assembly. USB data output to PC supports electronic patient record integration and GCP/GMP documentation requirements. Vital Medical supplies the MS5460 to South African hospitals, oncology units, geriatric care facilities and rehabilitation centres.
