Trolley-Mounted NIR Vein Finder for Hands-Free Cannulation
The VM-VFQV500T is the trolley-mounted configuration of the QV-500 near-infrared vein imaging system. The QV-500 imaging unit — which projects a real-time vein map directly onto the patient’s skin using NIR light absorbed by haemoglobin and reflected by surrounding tissue — is mounted on a height-adjustable mobile trolley stand. The stand is positioned over the patient’s arm or other cannulation site and locked in place, holding the projected vein image steady on the skin surface without requiring any operator to hold the device. Detection depth reaches up to 8mm below the skin surface, covering the peripheral veins used for most cannulation and venepuncture procedures. The NIR imaging performance is identical to that of the handheld QV-500 (VM-VFQV500) — the trolley configuration changes only the form factor, not the clinical output.
Hands-Free Advantage in Planned Cannulation Procedures
Difficult venous access cannulation typically requires both hands — one to stabilise the vein and skin, the other to insert and advance the cannula — making simultaneous handheld vein finder operation impractical without a second person. The trolley stand resolves this constraint entirely, allowing the procedure to be performed with the vein map continuously projected on the skin without any additional assistance. The trolley is mobile on castors, allowing it to be moved to any patient bedside, procedure chair, or treatment bay, and repositioned between patients without difficulty.
Configuration Choice and South African Availability
The QV-500 is available from Vital Medical in two configurations to suit different clinical workflows. The trolley version (VM-VFQV500T) is the preferred choice for planned procedures in hospital wards, dedicated cannulation rooms, oncology and chemotherapy suites, and renal dialysis units, where the device will be used repeatedly in the same clinical area and hands-free positioning is essential. The handheld version (VM-VFQV500) is better suited to mobile emergency use and rapid bedside assessments where portability takes priority. Available in South Africa from Vital Medical, both versions of the QV-500 support improved first-attempt cannulation success across the full range of adult and paediatric clinical settings.
